Why Men Need To Get Facial Treatments
May 5, 2014The One Skill that Makes an Excellent Esthetician
May 28, 2014Body waxing has long been popular with women wanting to remove excess hair. Lately, men have discovered it also. An esthetician is a person who specializes in caring for the outer skin of a person. It is the specialist you will likely be dealing with should you choose to have a body or leg waxing. It is important to prepare yourself in advance for this endeavor, as there can be discomfort involved, especially if the procedure is not gone about correctly. Here are a few tips to help both men and women prepare for their first ever waxing treatment.
Find a specialist
You will want to find someone who is a licensed esthetician. While there is no law, as there is with things like medicine, that determines who can and can’t perform a waxing, you want to be sure the person you entrust your skin to has been properly trained. Ask about their training and if they have been licensed for this particular procedure.
Sanitation
Look around to make sure that the area where the waxing is to be done is clean and that instruments are kept in disinfectant when not in use. Disposable coverings should be on the tables and the esthetician should wear disposable gloves throughout the waxing. If you question the sanitation of a particular place, don’t hesitate to search out a different one.
Don’t shave
Telling someone who wants rid of excess hair not to shave seems counter-productive, but you will want to go three to four weeks without shaving before a waxing. The hair needs to be long enough for the wax to adhere to and if it is too short, the results will not be as great. In addition, more skin irritation can occur if the hair is too short.
Sensitive areas
If a bikini or Brazilian waxing is part of your plan, women need to try and schedule it for the week after their menstrual cycle. This is the time when the area in question will be less sensitive and there will be less discomfort involved. Men may want to take a couple pain killers before the event to help deal with the pain. Yes, there will be pain! This is a very sensitive area and the skin is more tender here.
Wax types
While the type of wax used may be determined by the esthetician, there is always the chance you can choose. Strip waxing is less expensive but soft wax is gentler to the skin. It is almost certain you want to choose the soft wax for more sensitive areas. As for the other areas, it will be more a matter of whether you want to spend less money or experience less discomfort.
Test first
It may seem like the logical thing to go for an all-out waxing once you make up your mind and get the courage. Don’t. Everyone responds differently and you will do better if you “test wax” a fairly non-sensitive area first and see how you react to both the discomfort and the wax. You will want to see how much, if any irritation is caused. It is better to have one small area irritated than a majority of your body red and sore.
Medication warning
Some medications cause the skin to be extra sensitive. Make sure the esthetician is aware of all medications you are taking so she can inform you if any are apt to make the waxing more painful or if it might be wise to avoid it completely. In most cases, the medication will not negatively influence the procedure.
