Hello, September! Let’s Get this Fall Started Right.
January 30, 2014How Does Microdermabrasion Work?
April 11, 2014Why You Need Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a safe, effective, and pain free way to reduce the signs of premature aging, sun damage, and acne scars. Microdermabrasion, which can be performed by a trained esthetician or a dermatologist, is an outpatient treatment in which a powerful tool deeply exfoliates your skin, removing the top layer of dead skin cells and minimizing any complexion imperfections.
These treatments take place over a series of weeks, and your esthetician will adjust the power of the tool based on your unique skin care needs. Costing between $75-$200 most people need between six and eight session in order to see optimal results, and many spas will offer a package or bundle for your treatments. Microdermabrasion is not invasive, although after treatment, skin may be more sensitive to light, resulting in some increased photo-sensitivity. This can be avoided by using a physical sunscreen, before, during, and after your treatment. Be sure to tell your doctor or esthetician about any medications you are taking, as they can have an effect on your skin’s sensitivity to the treatment.
Essential Skin Treatment
Microdermabrasion essentially exfoliates your skin using a combination of both abrasion, to loosen dead and dirty skin cells, and then suction, to eliminate them. Microdermabrasion kits are available for home use, although they are much less effective and powerful than those used by dermatologists and esthetician . Even when performed in a doctor’s office or a day spa, this treatment is still significantly less expensive than other exfoliation procedures, like laser peels.
Many patients see visible results after the first treatment. Their skin will feel both softer and smoother. After a few treatments, patients may notice that their skin is less oily and shiny and that their pores are much less pronounced. Towards the end of their treatment plan, the most dramatic results are achieved. Visible signs of sun damage and aging, like fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, and skin discoloration are markedly decreased. People with moderate acne scars will also see some results with standard microdermabrasion sessions, however, these patients may need a more intensive treatment and/or additional session to eliminate all signs of scaring. This treatment may not be effective for severe acne scarring.
Great Benefits
One of the biggest benefits of microdermabrasion is that your skin becomes more receptive to anti-aging products, like retinoids. For more than 40 years, patients have been using retinoids to battle premature aging, and the two treatments work well together. If you’re dermatologist or esthiscian recommends a particular cleansing, moisturizing, and anti-aging routine, adopting these recommendations will prolong the benefits of your sessions. Your skin professional may also have a recommendation for a particular skin care line, so be sure to explore options that work within your budget. You can get good results at every price point. Your skin may be more sensitive to some products as well, so the skin care regime you were following before your treatments may be too harsh for your new complexion.
Most professional recommend treatments every three to four weeks, in order to see optimal results. Following up with a complete and gentle skin care routine after your treatments is important for maintaining your results between sessions. As always, being diligent about sunscreen and limiting exposure to harmful UV rays is the best way to prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration, but microdermabrasion offers an affordable way to reclaim youthful, healthier looking skin.
